The novel, published a few years after the end of the Second World War, is a ruthless and prophetic reflection on power. It is considered one of the most lucid representations of totalitarianism and also one of the first and most important examples of the dystopian novel. In fact, the action takes place in the near future of the world (the year 1984) in which power is concentrated in three immense superstates: Oceania (with London as its capital), Eurasia and Estasia. At the pinnacle of political power in Oceania is Big Brother (“Big Brother”), omniscient and infallible, which no one has seen in person but whose large posters are visible everywhere. The Ministry of Truth, in which the protagonist Smith works, is tasked with censoring books and newspapers that are not in line with official policy, to alter history and reduce the expressive possibilities of language. Although he is monitored by cameras, Smith begins to lead a “subversive” existence.

“Big Brother is watching you”: with this slogan, the British author showed his foresight, placing the accent on one of the hottest topics nowadays: the control of power over public opinion perpetrated through the means of communication. A milestone in English literature, 1984 is one of the best known and perhaps most controversial novels of the last century. A novel capable of stirring consciences and leading the reader to reflect on the past, the present and above all the future.
